Advocacy Update
Sign Ordinance Victory - For several months the Hotel Association of Los Angeles has been leading a coalition of business groups to fight a proposed City of Los Angeles law that would cut almost by half the amount of signage businesses can have on their properties. The regulations would further limit or outlaw various types of signs such as pole signs or electronic message signs. This would impact businesses throughout the City of Los Angeles, especially our membership.
After a significant push by the business coalition the City Council, at its Tuesday, May 26th meeting, voted to stop the ordinance and send it back to the drawing board until September. The City Council directed staff to work with the business community to find solutions to the problems we have raised. This was a victory for our coalition as the ordinance had been on a fast track to passage. For further information on the proposed ordinance please email Ruben Gonzalez at mail@hotelassociationla.com
Transit Occupancy Tax Effort - The Hotel Association of Los Angeles has sponsored legislation in the Los Angeles City Council to study the impact the Transit Occupancy Tax (TOT) has had on the ability of hotels to be competitive in retaining and gaining contracts to service airline crews and potential remedies to deal with negative impacts. This issue was raised by several of our members who lost airline contracts to jurisdictions as far away as Orange County due to the uneven playing ground the Los Angeles TOT creates. Budget and Finance Committee has had one hearing on the motion and the committee directed city staff to work with the association on finding solutions to the issue.
The Association is grateful to Councilmember (and soon to be City Controller) Wendy Greuel who sponsored and has championed the motion. YOU CAN HELP IN THIS EFFORT! If you are a hotel which currently has or has lost an airline contract please access our survey by CLICKING HERE. Fill out the survey and email it to mail@hotelassociationla.com
Air Quality District Charbroiler Rule - The Hotel Association of Los Angeles is providing input and working with the South Coast Air Quality Management District to make rule 1138, related to particulate matter caused by charbroilers, more business friendly than a similar law that was passed in the Bay Area last year. The Association is asking our hotel and restaurant members, who have chairbroilers and have not already provided a survey response, to fill out and e-mail back a survey on the subject to mail@hotelassociationla.com. The more information we have on this issue the better equipped we will be to limit the negative impact any proposed regulations would have on the hotel industry. Click Here to Access the Survey
