Today, Wednesday April 27th is Denim Day!

Denim Day is the longest-running sexual violence prevention and education campaign. Denim Day takes place Wednesday, April 27 and people everywhere are invited to wear jeans in solidarity with survivors of sexual violence. The theme for Denim Day 2022 is: “There is STILL no excuse and never an invitation to rape.”

Denim Day is held annually on a Wednesday in April in honor of Sexual Violence Awareness Month. The campaign started after an Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the justices ruled the victim must have consented as she was wearing tight denim jeans.

“Wearing jeans on Denim Day is a poignant symbol against destructive attitudes about sexual harassment, abuse, assault and rape and a way to support those who have been directly affected by these terrible acts,” said HALA Executive Director Heather Rozman. “We are proud to participate in this important movement as sexual violence awareness and prevention is an issue we prioritize all year round.”

HALA adheres to best practices for workplace safety by continuously working with organizations such as the Los Angeles Police Department, California Hotel & Lodging Association Security Directors’ Alliance and Businesses Ending Slavery and Trafficking (BEST).

Los Angeles-area hotels provide employees with up-to-date, state-of-the-art safety trainings that teach and empower them to identify potentially threatening situations and take appropriate actions, including personal self-defense classes, domestic violence training, sexual harassment training, and human trafficking identification and report training.

Member hotels deploy the best industry tools and technology to support all hotel managers and employees to ensure a safe environment for our employees, our guests and our City of Los Angeles community, including providing “personal notification devices” to all work-alone employees to use in emergency situations, an effort which is expected to have 100 percent deployment by 2020.

“Our efforts are working as our track record shows Los Angeles hotels are extremely safe,” Rozman said. “We know our vigilant training and education efforts will continue to keep our hotels and our communities safe for employees and guests.”

Denim Day has become a symbol of protest and a way to support survivors or sexual violence. In this sexual violence prevention and education campaign, community members, elected officials, businesses and students are asked to wear jeans to make a social statement. On April 24, 2019, millions of people across the world will wear jeans with a purpose, to support the cause. To learn more about Denim Day, go to www.denimdayinfo.org.
